The Natural History of the Chicken is a WONDERFUL film, can be found through a computer search and most libraries. Usually when I think ‘documentary’, I think facts. The History of the Chicken goes way beyond this; is an emotional exploration of the subject through stories. The first time I watched it I thought ,”Oh, I’ll give it three minutes them turn it off and read a book”, but most of the stories have burned into my being, I’m changed. I can away from my T.V. chair, unglued is a better word, thinking, “What a glorious world we life in; what wonderful people there are, what particularly special bird individuals I’ve met.
With this insight, I wrote and illustrated CHICKENS IN BIRTHDAY SUITS, about a little girl I know who celebrates birthdays the traditional way; balloons, gifts, cake, for each of her CHICKENS. I loved living with chickens! It’s been several years since they’ve flitted over my fence, but when a young friend of mine told me about the BIRTHDAY PARTIES she threw for each of her hens on their special day, I just had to go and meet her birds. Jillian hugged Tawni Alice as she walked me around her backyard introducing me to each bird and explaining each of their personalities and their favorite foods. And she told me about the most bazaar parties in the park; they had it all except frilly party dresses.
I wrote and Illustrated ‘Chicken’s In Birthday Suits‘ for all those who have chickens, children, or funny bones. The book is fictionalized just a little but the characters are REAL.
