Harry the Brain Surgeon and Scruffy

Often a thought rolls around in one part of our brains, gently poking at this or that and making logical transitions then surprise! Something is said or happens that INSTANTLY RIPS the thought into pieces and electric currents rush across barriers into new brain areas and pop out unrelated stuff. It almost hurts.

Sometimes adults forget surprises aren’t always bad so in my book ‘Eagles and Banana Peels’ a grandfather tries to teach this to others, although he doesn’t learn it very well himself.

I miss heard my deaf neighbors and thought the man across the street was a brain surgeon. But he lived in a tiny little house so I wondered for years if he’d gotten sued so many times he now had to live across the street from me. Then I found out he hadn’t been in the hospital operating on people, he’d been there being operated on.

Another good example happened yesterday as I photographed John’s friend. He needed the picture for the inside back cover of the book he’d just finished writing. The purpose of the book was to answer questions his son had often asked. The author was stiff and uncomfortable so we put his dog on his lap. As I was snapping away the man stiffened up again so I asked about his son. He loosened up as he talked then ran out of words and became board- like again.

He shifted his dog into a new position as I asked, “What’s his name?” He answered, “Scruffy.”  My mind panicked as I empathized with his son, that poor boy and as I tried to shift from son to dog node.  nancymauerman.com

He Always Eats His Fruits and Veggies

“Is it true we need to eat five to seven fruits and vegetable a day to be healthy?” John said.

“Well, it’s more like seven to nine,” I answered.

“You’re kidding.” then I heard marbles rattle in his head before he said, “What do you suppose pistachios are and walnuts?” Then he answered  himself optimistically, “Fruit!”  He gleefully discovered chocolate ice cream is made with coco beans- it’s a veggie. He was delighted to find beer is made of grain- another fruit. He laughed and added potato chips, corn chips, dill pickles, and just for good measure sour kraut.

“They” are right. Eating well makes a person feel good!   nancymauerman.com

I Wondered What Do You Bring To A Chicken’s Birthday Party?

Does your pet lay eggs? My young friend Jillian has four friends that do. This picture is from the book Chickens In Birthday Suits, a story about a birthday party Jillian gave her hen, Tawni Alice. Human friends were invited who brought gifts, three other chickens came and Jillian provided balloons, cake and hats. The hats were for Tawni Alice’s human friends only.

If you ever wanted to know what kind of gift to bring to a chicken’s birthday party read the book it was fun to write and illustrate and it’s fun to read.   nancymauerman.com

Onion Tears

I was seven when I started helping my mother in the kitchen, I was seven the first time she asked me to peel an onion. “Isn’t that thing ready yet?” she kept saying but she was patient and waited; it was my first onion peel after all.

I’d been surprised and surprised again but carefully removed every single layer then I presented her with something about the size of a hazelnut.

She wasn’t pleased and the surprise of it all made her cranky I was already crying onion tears.  nancymauerman.com
