A Topiary Surprise

A strange and beautiful plant came up last spring with delicate branches and tiny leaves. Neither John nor I recognized the pretty thing so I nurtured it rather than pulled it. As she grow at the edge of my driveway, between bricks and the curb, I decided to trim her into a crescent moon shape. John has made friends with a blue jay that sits beside him on the front porch step, a squirrel that takes peanuts from his fingers and pats the tips of John’s fingers too to show his love, and also John has a family of crows that call for food and leave sizable love notes on his truck. (John’s always wanted a camo paint job anyway so if we squint real hard and pretend a little he’s got one.)

My plant buddy grew steadily until in mid summer. Then I finally did recognize my her. I had turned a tumble weed into a topiary! The picture below is my crescent shaped tumble weed all dried up ready to blow. Two days after the photo she let go of the ground and flew the coop.

Just a side note to all my friends; I was with John a few days in the hospital. He has pneumonia. John sent home today to care for the animals. All of us here with hair, fur and feathers are waiting for him to come home.
