Teacher Hands Out Magic

My teacher handed out magic too- the desire to read. Now I can time- travel backwards into history or enter new worlds whenever I want. As a child I was a slow reader. The effort was so great and the plots of the beginning readers didn’t interest me. So when my children were small I wrote ‘The Magic Suit’ about a child who saves his mother’s life!

In this beginning reader Mrs Beemer hands out magic suits! Wearing his, Paul lifts off the ground and plays in the clouds then as a near tragic adventure. Find ‘The Magic Suit’ at Amazon as a paper back or down load it onto your computer, kindle, tablet, or phone. (The Magic Suit’ will be free for a few days as an ebooks, starting tomorrow.)  nancymauerman.com

I Fly Out The Door From ‘The Magic Suit’

I Looked 50 Years Younger!

If my husband liked a shirt he bought seven of them! He repeated this pattern with all other clothing items and he always wore his clothing to tatters. I also refuse to retire a piece of clothing until its threads can no longer hold the patches together, but today an old pair of skinny jeans let me down.

People often walk to lose weight, but today when I walked I lost years! By the time I got home I looked to any passer-by to be years and years younger! A few blocks into my walk the elastic at my waist suddenly decided it was too fatigued to hold up my pants! I clutched my waistband and to anyone driving by on my busy street I appeared to be twenty years younger to make my living in a hip hop band.

Below Is an illustration from ‘The Magic Suit.’ Paul dresses himself in a new suit and can now fly, shoot out rockets, and even save his mother’s life! This is book for boys and fun loving girls; a beginning reader.

Mount Rainier and the Red Hat

Most every time I’ve visited Washington state I find Mt. Rainier floating her massive shadow across the cloud covered sky. I’ve never seen this in Portland Oregon where I live with my friend Mt Hood.

In my new book, ‘Anna’s Robin’ Anna shrinks to mouse size and hops on her robin’s back and they soar through mountain shadows in the sky. Anna and her robin also discover other wonderful oddities in nature but mostly the book speaks about how much Anna is loved by her Mom, her robin  and her Father in Heaven who created the wonderful oddities.

Below is a crayola crayon portrait of Anna. I drew this when my daughter was small.and still wearing her red hat all day, every day, to the store, to friends homes, to church and to bed.  nancymauerman.com

Verdi’s Requiem Anna’s Robin

My husband John died. Verdi’s Requiem is my mirror with its pain, eminence beauty, and the loudest drums I’ve ever felt.

The picture below is from my book Anna’s Robin. The first three pages speak of a gentle sorrow and a big adventure;

Anna was leaving again,                                                                                                 Wearing her red hat high.                                                                                                    She carried an alligator purse,                                                                                             And kissed her mama goodbye.

She left but don’t moan Momma,                                                                                      Don’t moan Momma,                                                                                                         Don’t moan Momma,                                                                                                         she’ll come home soon.

Anna shrank to mouse size and hopped on her robin’s back.                                            The robin’s chest was rusty orange and her had a yellow beak.                                              And because they’d been friends for a long time,                                                                     He sang her a robin song raspy and sweet.

John’s on a big adventure, I’m the pain waiting to see him again, I’m in the beauty of memory, and I’m feeling the big drums of life of Verdi’ Requiem.  nancymauerman.com

Superman and the Bad Mermaid Queen

I need treasure, something like my sister has, something spectacular. I’m old but my sister Anna’s just a little kid with a big head like a Q tip. She FINDS things because she’s so small and her eyes are much closer to the ground than mine. That’s why, and the only reason why, she found the key down in the dirt before I did. My sister has a dragon called Iva Lou who is on our journey with us too.

This page and the picture below are from my book ‘Superman and Bad Mermaid Queen’ that I hope to have published in a few months. Why waste time writing and illustrating kid’s books? BECAUSE CHILDREN NEED GREAT LITERATURE! You may not think much about my books but all children should own great  stories. Shakespeare, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Bible, stories about the Hobbits, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Kids by David  Kirk should be at home in children’s hands.

Years ago when I realized Shakespeare was a stranger to me, and that I couldn’t focus unless I read his works out loud, I read to my five and seven year old children. AND THEY UNDER STOOD the plot and character development.

As I read my Science Magazine I see more leading scientists are from countries other than mine. They’re befitting from our great colleges and from private business money as they follow and develop their ideas. Wouldn’t be great if our country could supply more people of greatness. I propose brilliance starts with being raised and surrounded by greatness rather than mediocrity.  nancymauerman.com
