A Portrait Of A Child And A Life Lived Not Carefully

When I was three I discovered scribbling was more FUN than coloring carefully inside the lines. Staying in those the lines was boring and tedious although it communicated an image-idea better than chaos.  Everyone around me considered coloring in the lines desirable. Scribbling did not look good but it felt fine!  And I decided someday I would make scribbles tell a story too.

I was close to thirty in art school and working on a tight rendering of, I think it was, a spoon. After a hundred hours or so I couldn’t take the tedious cross hatching anymore and finished the picture by making several layers of tiny scribbles. I expected to get an F and I didn’t care. I liked it. I’ve been scribbling ever sense.

Understanding the rules and the structure of truths then using self-discipline to live the truths are essential to a joyful life. The same is true in making good pictures that not only communicate an idea but have a spark of surprise and life. Hollywood would have us believe we are all flaky, undisciplined, immoral but happy. They say break rules and the structure of God’s plan and societal truths because its fun. I hear many writers and directors say they were surprised to see they could get the audience to approve of badness so then they decide to go further to see they can make us approve of and embrace evil.

On the other side of the spectrum we could live CAREFULLY down to hell meaning stay buried in TV and video games. Never take the risk of doing it wrong or getting hurt feelings. Never make friends or following through on ideas like an, “I was thinking of you,” phone call or helping a neighbor rake his lawn.

Hildegard of Bingen studied the rules, the reasons for them, then lived with great joy and exuberance. The picture below, of Anna, obeys many art rules and is scribbled in Crayola Crayon as are most of my children’s books. Several of the stories are about Anna and her brother Paul. They and samples of them can all be found at Amazon.  nancymauerman.com

Children’s Books Are For Adults

Chicken’s In Birthday Suits is based on real and true events. A child- aged friend of mine threw a party for one of her chickens at the park. She invited guests who brought presents for the hen. The chicken’s person brought cake, balloons, and presents. I fictionalized the event into a very funny story told story by the birthday bird herself.

A real mom read the story to her children and decided to have a birthday party in the park for the family dog. She turned the fictionalized event back into reality. If she keeps the book in her home for the next eighty years the book will forever remind her and her children of their adventure. During the turbulent teens her children will venturing out and sometimes succeed other times fail and when they come home and touch base the book will remind them they are loved and cherished and remind Mom too.

The children will grow up and have children of their own, buy a copy of Chicken’s In Birthday Suites and have a birthday party in the park with Grandma and young friends and a tradition of love is entrenched.  nancymauerman.com

An Inspired Spider and a Wrinkle Removal

John waves a broomstick up and down through the air from our front porch to our truck. He’s beating down spider webs but I bet he looks strange to the neighbors.

John’s not afraid of spiders in fact he still walks house spiders onto a piece of paper and shakes them outside. He just doesn’t want another brown recluse spider bite. Luckily he got bit by one a few years ago. He looked up treatment in his books, treated the bite with a Tens Unit, and took himself  to the doctor checking for blood problems. But the bite brought tears to his eyes it hurt so much.

This is why the bite was lucky or inspired, if you can call it that. The doctor found John’s leukemia before it was severe. Great timing.

I’m amused to see John walk to the truck, and I’m thankful for an inspired spider. What a great life. The picture below is from my silly book, “Old McDonald Had A Haunted House.’ It’s free as an EBook at Amazon for a few more days  nancymauerman.com

Cat Talk

The woman opened the door for no reason then she poured her cats’ favorite food into two bowls, both of which were already full. All the time the woman chattered and then she flipped around a feather on a string but she didn’t look like she was having any fun. Still chattering the woman sat down while the cats watched. One cat sat down in front of the woman again meowed and flipped his tail.

The second cat swished her tail to the other cat meaning, “What has she talking about? Do you understand anything she says?”

The first cat blinked and made a quick flip with her tail to say, “How could I possibly understand anything when she doesn’t have a tail.”

Bats and Family Sing Alongs

The picture below is from my silly book, ‘Old McDonald Had a Haunted House.’ My Mom and Dad, brother Don and I never sang together although we all loved music.

My Mom loved folk songs but they drove my Dad up the wall. She stayed silent. My Dad loved opera but evidently didn’t feel confident to sing along having not learned the languages nor trained his voice. When Don grew up he took voice lessons and sang solos in church and at home.

Classic music played through our house everyday with opera, on the radio, on Saturdays. The names  and histories  behind the sounds were never mentioned so if I was hungry for a particular piece of music I’d say, “Can we hear the one that goes…” and I’d try to hum the tune. Either my humming was off or their listening was because my hunger was never satisfied. A slight look of panic permeated my parents eyes and later the eyes of guys at the music store (and I always broadened my music appreciation because I never came home with the music I’d shopped for.)

I would have loved to have sung with my family and if we’d had silly songs like ‘Old McDonald’ no one would have worried about voice control. This book is free as an EBook at Amazon starting today.  nancymauerman.com

Old McDonald Had A Haunted House

Wouldn’t it fun to have family night every week? Each person takes a turn planning it. Maybe there are only two in your family maybe ten.

My children started taking their turns at planning at age seven. I remember when Paul planned his first family night. He taught an idea that was important to him and planned a game and snack, which I helped with. Then he called the local doughnut shop and made RESERVATIONS for dinner.

Wouldn’t it be fun to sing Old McDonald Had A Haunted House as a family? This song/ eBook will be free for a several days starting on October 16, 2014. It will be available at Amazon.

Formica Reborn

Formica Dinnette Patrice Foxford Mauerman is my cat. While Formica was sleeping I drew on this illustration for my upcoming book ‘Superman and the Bad Mermaid Queen. I sat it back on the floor about six inches from where I’d picked it up.

When Formica woke up she discovered the entire room had changed. She had to rediscover every part of it.  I wish I could see my life completely new and changed as often as my cat does.  nancymauerman.com

I Wondered What Do You Bring To A Chicken’s Birthday Party?

Does your pet lay eggs? My young friend Jillian has four friends that do. This picture is from the book Chickens In Birthday Suits, a story about a birthday party Jillian gave her hen, Tawni Alice. Human friends were invited who brought gifts, three other chickens came and Jillian provided balloons, cake and hats. The hats were for Tawni Alice’s human friends only.

If you ever wanted to know what kind of gift to bring to a chicken’s birthday party read the book it was fun to write and illustrate and it’s fun to read.   nancymauerman.com
